Introduction
Treponema Pallidum is the causative agent of the venereal disease syphilis. The estimated annual incidence of syphilis is about 12 millions news cases worldwide. A study reported that a large number of HIV-infected females exhibited reactive syphilis serological test results. Some key factors that have contributed to this rise include the crack cocaine epidemic and the high incidence of prostitution among drug users.
Treponema Pallidum is a spirochete bacterium with an outer envelope and a cytoplasmic membrane. Clinical manifestations of syphilis without specific treatment are:
- primary stage: 45 days; appearence of a chancre which may be painless and go unnoticed. It desappears in 3 to 6 weeks without treatment.
- secondary stage: a few months to 2 years; often marked by a skin rash characterized by brown sores. This stage is contagious because of the presence of active bacteria in these sores.
- tertiary stage: over 2 years; asymptomatic period generally non contagious. It may lead to complication: nervous system damage, heart disease, blindness, mental disorientation and eventually death.
